Northern, central regions may see flooding as rivers swell

The country’s major rivers, especially Padma, Jamuna, Dudhkumar and Gorai, have been flowing above danger marks at different points, Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre said on Saturday.

It forecast that low-lying areas of Kurigram, Pabna, Kushtia, Manikganj, Rajbari and Faridpur districts may be inundated in the next four-five days.

All major rivers except the Surma-Kushiyara, are likely to continue to rise in the next 24 hours till Sunday morning.

The Jamuna river at Aricha Point and the Atrai river at Baghabari point may cross the danger level in the meantime, the centre said.

“People in northern Lalmonirhat and its adjoining areas are likely to see a steady flooding as the water level of the Teesta remained stable till Saturday noon,” the centre’s executive engineer M Arifuzzaman Bhuiyan told The Financial Express.

He said the situation may force some people to leave home and take shelter in safer places.

Significant rainfalls were also recorded in the country in 24 hours till Saturday morning. The upstream regions in India also witnessed higher rainfalls that contributed to rising water levels of the trans-boundary rivers.

According to the forecasting centre, the water level of the Padma at Goalundo was 42 centimetres (cm) above the danger level.
