Non-MPO teachers, employees call off hunger strike

Non-enlisted teachers and employees in the Monthly Pay Order system called off hunger strike on Friday after receiving the Prime Minister’s assurance about their demand.

The teachers and employees, working in different educational institutions, started hunger strike on last Sunday in front of Jatiya Press Club demanding their inclusion into the MPO.

Additional Secretary Sajjadul Hasan, also personal secreatry-1 to Prime Minister, on Friday informed the protestors that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave assurance to meet their demand.

Following this information the demonstration was called off on Friday afternoon.

Non-MPO Educational Institution Teacher-Staff Federation President Golam Mahmudunnabi Dollar said the Prime Minister’s PS told them that measures to sign up approved institutions will be initiated very soon.

"The hunger strike has been called off upon the Prime Minister’s assurance,” he said.

Several hundred teachers from across the country have gathered in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka since December 26 to demand that state-sanctioned institutions be included on the pay list. They started a hunger strike on Sunday.

On Tuesday, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid met the demonstrators in an attempt to break the strike, when he said that he received the finance minister’s consent.

According to bdnews24, teachers had continued to protest despite minister's assurance.

The demonstrators, however, had said they would call off the hunger strike if the Prime Minister assured them.
