RAJSHAHI, Nov 30: It was early in the morning of Saturday, several hundred people rushed to the zero point of Shaheb Bazaar to procure onion at a fair price to be sold through the outlet of Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB).
But, even after waiting for hours, the TCB truck carrying onion did not show up. At around 10.00 am, people who had lined up were able to know that there will be no sale of onion in Rajshahi through TCB outlets on Saturday.
As a result, the customers who were waiting eagerly in queue, returned disappointed. Before leaving the place, they put their bags and whatever trash they had, in queues as a symbol of their presence and retaining the queue serial for the next-day of purchasing of onion from the TCB outlet.
It is learnt, like other places of the country, imported onion was being sold at Tk 45 per kg from several TCB outlets of Rajshahi from last Sunday. A large number of customers were seen to throng and queue up behind all outlets of the city to procure onion.
On Saturday morning a large number of people were also seen at the spots of every TCB outlets to procure onion at a fair price. They were seen waiting eagerly in queue for the TCB onion truck to come.
But, waiting till 10-00 am, the willing customers in the queue could learn that the selling of onion has been suspended for next two days.
According to sources, the onion was being sold at Tk 210 to Tk 250 per kg in the markets of Rajshahi on Saturday which is out of purchase capacity of many people.
