No restriction on 4G spectrum auction, licensing

Chamber judge of the Supreme Court stayed the High Court order that stalled 4G spectrum auction and licensing process on Thursday.

The SC Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain stayed the HC verdict, which was announced two and half hours before, considering the petition filed by the state counsel.

On December 4, Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) published the notice announcing 4G spectrum auction and licensing.

The notice said BTRC will auction 4G spectrum on February 13 and accept applications for licences until January 14 from telecom operators to offer the fourth-generation or 4G services.

According to bdnews24, following a petition citing that the telecom regulator’s circular contradicts the 2008 broadband guideline, the High Court stayed the process earlier on Thursday.

Later in the day, the state took the issue to the Supreme Court’s chamber judge challenging the order and secured a freeze on it.
