No food shortage during calamities in 2017, minister claims

No one suffered from scarcity of food during natural disasters last year as the government ensured sustainable disaster management.

Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya made the claim on Saturday.

The minister said weather alerts, rescue operation, distribution of relief goods and rehabilitation were ensured during natural calamities.

Maya called for creating much awareness among the people about disaster and its consequences and raising the people's resilience capacity to face any catastrophe successfully.

The minister was speaking as the chief guest at a seminar marking the National Disaster Preparedness Day-2018 at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the city.

Disaster Management and Relief Secretary M Shah Kamal preside over the programme.

The day was observed across the country with a call to expedite disaster preparedness programmes for reducing the loss of lives and properties in natural calamities.

According to BSS, the speakers emphasised disseminating information, training and knowledge among the rural people, especially living in the disaster-prone areas through coordinated efforts to reduce disaster-losses.

Parliament Standing Committee on disaster management ministry Syed Abul Hossain Babla, Armed Forces Division Director General (DG) Brigadier General Ezazul Bari, Department of Disaster Management (DDM) DG Riaz Ahmed, Fire Service and Civil Defence Directorate DG Brigadier General Ali Ahmed Khan were present, among others.
