Road accidents kill nine in two districts

At least nine people have killed in two separate road crashes in Faridpur and Lalmonirhat districts on Wednesday.

Of them, six were killed as a passenger bus hit  a tree on Dhaka-Khulna highway in Faridpur while three were killed and two others injured as a pick-up truck hit a memorial plaque on Kurigram-Rangpur highway in Lalmonirhat.

In Faridpur, the accident occurred in Sadar upazila's Dhudli area around 6:30am.

Several passengers were killed on the spot after a Khulna-bound bus of AK Travel from Dhaka rammed into a roadside tree, said Kotwali police’s in-charge SM Nasim.

Some of the victims succumbed to their injuries while being taken to hospital.

The identities of the victims could not be known immediately, according to UNB news agency.

In Lalmonirhat, the accident occurred near Shimultala Bazar in Borobari Union in Sadar upazila at 6.30 am.

A pick-up truck coming from Rangpur ploughed into the Shaheed Minar (martyrs' plaque) beside the road, killing the three.

Two persons died on the scene and the third died on his way to the Lalmonirhat Central Hospital. Ten others were injured.

The victims are yet to be identified.

The victims used the pick-up truck to head home in Kurigram from Rangpur to celebrate the Eid, said locals.
