Newborn wrongly declared dead loses fight for life

The newborn baby, who was found alive prior to her burial in the city's Azimpur Graveyard on Monday, has died at Shishu Hospital early Tuesday.

Dr Mohammad Abu Tayeb, deputy director of Dhaka Shishu Hospital, said the baby was declared dead at 1:33am, according to a UNB report.

Sharmin Akter, 20, wife of Minhaz Uddin, hailing from Dhamrai, got admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) with labour pain early Sunday. Later, she gave birth to a baby girl through normal delivery around 7:30am Monday, but the duty doctors there declared the child dead.

Sharif, a maternal uncle of the baby, brought the baby girl to Azimpur Graveyard for burial. When the child was being given bath for burial, all of a sudden she started moving.

Later, the baby was taken to Azimpur Maternity Hospital where the doctors referred the infant to Dhaka Shishu (Children) Hospital.
