New finance secy to spearhead reforms

The government Tuesday appointed Mohammed Muslim Chowdhury, an additional secretary who had pioneered some reforms, as
secretary-in-charge of the Finance Division.
He assumes office today (Wednesday), as his predecessor, Hedayetullah Al Mamun, went on LPR (leave preparatory to retirement).
Mr Chowdhury joined government service in 1984 from BCS (audit and accounts cadre).
Before his elevation, he had served as additional secretary of the Finance Division.
Hailed from Chittagong, he passed B.Com with honours, M.Com from Chittagong University and did his MSc in finance from the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom.
Mr Chowdhury is one of the pioneers of Public-Private Partnership in the country. Besides, he was actively involved with different reforms undertaken by the finance division.
Talking to the FE, Mr Chowdhury said: "There will be some reforms during my tenure to facilitate service to the people."
He brought a reform recently in pension system, making it easier for the retirees to get pension.
Government had nominated him as director of the Sonali Bank, Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company, Eastern Refinery and Dhaka BRT Company.
