New CJ Mahmud Hossain joins office

Newly appointed Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain has joined office.

The Attorney General's office and the Supreme Court Bar Association accorded reception to the new Chief Justice on Sunday morning.

Earlier on Saturday, he was sworn in as Chief Justice at Bangabhaban. President Abdul Hamid administered the oath taking ceremony.

Mahmud Hossain, a judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, was made chief justice barely three months after Surendra Kumar Sinha resigned from the post.

The post of the chief justice fell vacant when Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha resigned on November 10 last year after he went on leave on health grounds in October of the same year, reports UNB.

Justice Abdul Wahhab Miah, the senior most judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, who had been serving as acting chief justice, quitted his post hours after the new CJ was appointed on Friday.
