The Netherlands in a letter assured Bangladesh that it will help to ensure justice and accountability for atrocities committed against the Rohingya people by the Myanmar authorities through the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

The Netherlands foreign minister Stef Blok wrote the letter to the Bangladesh foreign minister Dr AK Abdul Momen where the Dutch minister reiterated his country’s commitment to ensure justice for the forcibly displaced Rohingya people.

The Ambassador of the Netherlands Harry Verweij met Dr Momen in the state guest house in Dhaka on Sunday where the envoy handed over the letter, according to a foreign ministry statement.

In a joint statement issued by the Netherlands and Canada on September 2, 2020, both the countries pledged full cooperation in support of the Gambia case filed against Myanmar in the ICJ, the envoy mentioned.

The Netherlands and Canada will file a separate joint petition in this regard, he added, saying that Gambia last year accused Myanmar of violating the 1948 Convention on the Prohibition of Genocide in Myanmar.

Ambassador Harry Verweij said his country’s support would continue for Bangladesh in the Rohingya issue, and Dutch government is committed for a lasting solution to the Rohingya crisis.
