Nationwide protests on violence against women, girls held

Nationwide protests against the recent violence against women and girls, including rape and tortures, held across the country on Monday.

Participants in those protests demanded immediate actions from the government to stop all sorts of violence against girls and women, including physical and sexual assaults.

Protests were held simultaneously in 24 districts, including in Dhaka, in a joint protest from 27 women rights organizations on Monday.

Action Aid and National Forum of Preventing Violence Against Women jointly organised the protests in the backdrop of the recent violence against women and girl across Bangladesh.

Protesters in the capital demanded the law makers and enforcers for availing prompt actions after such incidents, including arrest of alleged offenders and proceed for a speedy trial of the involved persons in such incidents.

They also formed a human chain in the city and urged the authorities concerned to hold accountable the law enforcers, physicians and others involved in the justice process for a fair trial.

Besides, they were also vocal for incorporating the court order to ensure safety of women and girls in work places and educational institutes, use information technology and modern equipment to ensure safety in public places and transports.

The protestors also emphasized on mass awareness and joint move from the government, private and non-government as well as individual level in order to build a strong shield against the rapists and perpetrators across the country.

The speakers also said that the lingering justice system and failure to bring the culprits under punishment worsening the situation.

Meanwhile, the recent violence against women, including the Noakhali incident have sparked huge protest across the country including Dhaka taking protesters to block roads in the city's Shahbagh intersection and others areas demanding justice.

Law enforcers, however, arrested four masterminds in the Noakhali rape torture of a woman, including the main accused in the case, after the video footage of the incident went viral on social media.
