Narayanganj launch capsize: Death toll reaches eight, four still missing

Divers have so far pulled eight dead bodies out of the Shitalakshya River after a launch named ML Ashraf Uddin capsized with more than 50 people onboard on Sunday afternoon.

The death toll now reached 8, Ershad Hossain, duty officer at the Department of Fire Service and Civil Defence told the FE.

Two bodies were recovered on Monday, the second day of the rescue operation.

However, he could not provide the identities of the victims.

“At least 4 to 5 passengers of the launch are still missing,” he said.

"The operation is going on to find out the missing passengers," Ershad said.

Out of the eight rescued bodies, the divers from the fire department rescued six bodies and Bangladesh Coast Guard officials rescued one body.

Besides, local people pulled one out of the river, the duty officer added.

The Munshiganj-bound launch ML Ashraf Uddin capsized in the Shitalakshya River in Narayanganj after the cargo vessel MV Rupshi-9, owned by City Group, hit it forcefully on Sunday.
