Naogaon quilt makers passing busy time

NAOGAON, Dec 25: In the middle of winter season, the demand for quilts increases manifold in Mohadevpur upazila of the district.

The business of making hand woven quilts is an age old tradition in the upazila and quilt makers in the area become busy in their trade this season.

People rush to the shops not only to buy new quilts but also to take out their old worn quilts to give them a makeover keeping the makers busy and the business flourishing in the area.

According to quilt makers, they become busy in stitching quilts from morning till midnight due to considerable increase in demand.

Quilt is an additional item besides their regular products like pillows and mattresses.

Quilts are available in every shade and colour suitable for all age groups from children to the elderly persons.

One Farid Uddin who came to a quilt shop from Paharpur village said cotton products are warmer than polyester ones, adding that people also prefer to call workers to their homes to make the quilts.

Quilt maker Faruk Hossain said demand of the product is on the rise in the market as it is the peak season.

A single size quilt is selling at Tk 800 to Tk 1000 and a double size one at Tk 1,200 to Tk 2,000 as per the quality, he added.

Arman Hossain, a shop owner in Sadar upazila said, "Our business is going very well. The business would gain more momentum if it rains and gets colder."

Meanwhile, the quilt makers are expecting to continue their business till mid-February.
