'Myanmar should take lessons from our communal harmony'

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said Myanmar should take lessons from the religious harmony of Bangladesh.

"I think Myanmar should take lessons how to run a country by keeping religious harmony intact," she said on Sunday.

The Prime Minister was addressing a views-exchange meeting at Ganabhaban with Buddhist religious leaders and distinguished persons of the community on the occasion of the Buddha Prurnima.

Sheikh Hasina said a person belonging to any religion has the right to be there on the soil where he or she was born, reports UNB.

"That person's rights need to be preserved, that person needs to get all sorts of facilities from the government," she said.

Talking about sheltering Rohingyas on humanitarian ground in Bangladesh, the Prime Minister said the government has also ensured their security.

"We've ensured there'll be no clash and anarchy among them ...," she added.

Hasina also said Bangladesh has not engaged in any conflict with Myanmar over the issue as it continued its efforts to resolve the problem through dialogue.

"As a result, Bangladesh was acclaimed by all across the world," she said.

Religious Affairs Minister Principal Matiur Rahman presided over the function.

Trustee of the Buddhist Religious Welfare Trust Dayal Kumar Barua handed over a cheque for Tk 500,000 to the Prime Minister for relief and welfare fund to help the forcibly displaced Rohingya people.
