The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) on Thursday approved six projects, including one to construct multi-storeyed buildings for insolvent freedom fighters in every district and upazilas across the country.

The approval came from the 19th Ecnec meeting of the current fiscal year, held at the NEC conference room in the city with Ecnec Chairperson and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

The 'Construction of Multi-storeyed Bhaban for Insolvent Freedom Fighters in Every District/Upazila Project' involving an estimated cost of Tk 22.73 billion (Tk 2,273.21 crore) and the total cost will come from the national exchequer, said Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal while briefing reporters after the meeting.

Under the project, the 532 five-storey buildings will be constructed in 354 upazilas of the county's 64 districts, he said.

There will be total 8,000 flats, each having 982-square feet space, in the multi-storey buildings for insolvent freedom fighters under the project which will be implemented by June 2020.

The Liberation War Affairs Ministry placed the project as the Prime Minister on January 18, 2015 gave directives during her visit to the ministry to allocate 10,000 flats among insolvent freedom fighters across the country by constructing multi-storeyed buildings, he said.

The objective of the project is to improve the lifestyle of freedom fighters who fell behind socio-economically, he added.

The Planning Minister said a total of six projects were placed at the Ecnec meeting. "The meeting approved all the six projects involving an overall cost of Tk 74.66 billion (Tk 7,466.73 crore)," he said, reports UNB.
