Finance Minister AMA Muhith called on Saturday for greater decentralisation of the administration to render better public services to the grassroots level people.
"What we need now is the total restructuring of administration in the country", Muhith told the audience.
He was speaking at the 17th ICAB National Award ceremony at the city hotel.
The awards were handed over at a formal ceremony organised by the Institute of Chartered Accountants Bangladesh (ICAB).
"Most of the districts in Bangladesh have more population than many independent countries in the world", the Finance Minister said.
"So, to provide a huge population with better public service, we need to decentralise our governance structure", he added.
Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed, who was present on the occasion as the special guest, said "Bangladesh started its journey in 1971 after its independence as a war- ravaged country. But it has become a role model for poverty reduction in the world over the years with its impressive economic progress".
Eminent economist Professor DR. Wahiduddin Mahmud said, "Although, the quality of auditing in Bangladesh has attained the global standard over the years, the quality of corporate governance is still lagging behind".
"However, good auditing can lead to better corporate governance by creating demand for greater transparency", he added.
Chairman of Financial Reporting Council(FRC) Chairman CQK Mustaq Ahmed and Comptroller and Auditor General of Bangladesh Masud Ahmed also spoke on the occasion.
A six-member Jury Board chaired by Md. Matiul Islam reviewed the recommended list of award winners as well as Merit Certificate Winners for this year's ICAB award.
The other members of the Jury Board were former adviser to the Caretaker government Professor Wahiduddin Mahmud and Rokia Afzal Rahman , former Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr. Mohammed Farashuddin, Editor of The Financial Express A.H.M. Moazzem Hossain and former BSEC Chairman Faruq Ahmad Siddiqi.
The three best annual reports selected under each award category will also be nominated by ICAB to compete in the SAFA forum in recognition of their excellence in financial disclosure.
Last year, Bangladesh secured the first position in five categories among the SAFA countries.The categories were-Private Banks, Financial Services, Public Sector Entities, NGOs and Corporate Governance.
Earlier in the day, ICAB also launched its CA Women's Forum celebrating the number of women CA qualified members crossing the one hundred mark.
Dr. Gowher Rizvi, Adviser to the Prime Minister was present as the chief guest in the programme while Suraiya Begum, Senior Secretary, Prime Minister's Office, was the guest of honour.
The CA Women's Forum will work both at policy and implementation levels to support present and future women members and other women stakeholders.
