The newly elected members of parliament will take their oath of office at 11:00am today (Thursday) at the oath-taking chamber in the Parliament.

The secretariat of parliament announced that the time was set as they received the election gazette on Wednesday, report bdnews24.com and UNB.

Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury will take her oath as legislative member as the new lawmaker elected from Rangpur-6 constituency before swearing in the newly elected members.

In keeping with tradition, the Awami League members will take their oaths first since they are the biggest bloc in parliament. The rest will follow accordingly.

After the ceremony, the new MPs will sign the parliament secretariat office signature book. Group photos will be taken afterwards.

Earlier, Election Commission (EC) Helaluddin Ahmed said the commission sent a letter to the parliament secretary for taking necessary preparations to arrange the oath-taking ceremony of the newly-elected MPs.

Helaluddin Ahmed gave the information while talking to reporters at Nirbachan Bhaban on Wednesday.

"The gazette containing the details of 298 newly-elected MPs has been published and we've sent a copy to the parliament secretary so that they can take preparations for holding the oath-taking ceremony," he said.

Replying to a journalist's query whether the EC is happy with the election, the EC secretary said, "Our CEC has said a peaceful election was held in the country and he also thanked everyone related to the election process for their efforts in this regard."

Asked about Oikyafront's memorandum placed before the EC, he said, "Anyone can place a memorandum or a letter to the Election Commission. We accepted it and the commission will take the decision in this regard."

"A few incidents of small-scale violence occurred on the voting day and the Commission directed the Inspector General of Police to submit a report after investigating the incidents," he said.

Responding to a question about not oath taking of five elected BNP MPs, he said it is a rule to take oath within three days of publication of the gazette and the 11th parliament will go into session within a month.

"If anyone fails to take oath within 90 days of the 1st session, his constituency will fall vacant," he added.

According to article 148 (2A) of the Constitution, the newly-elected members of parliament will be obliged to take oath within three days after the publication of the election results in official gazette, or else, their memberships will cease to exit.

Elections were held for 299 of 300 seats in parliament on Sunday. The election commission announced the results of 298 seats on the same night. The result of one seat was stayed due to disruptions in the voting.

The Awami League won 259 seats, while the Grand Alliance it leads secured 288 seats in the parliament. Having secured an absolute majority, the party will now form a government for a third consecutive term.

The Jatiya Oikya Front, the opposition alliance that includes the BNP, faced a massive defeat, winning just seven seats.

The alliance has accused the ruling party of obstructing voters, rigging votes and throwing out the polling agents of the opposition.

They have demanded a new election but the Election Commission has rejected the demand.
