Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur over the country in next 48 hours, after a rain and thunderstorms swept over the capital on Sunday morning affecting the normal life.

About 50 millimetre rainfall was recorded in the morning until 9:30 am in the city, causing waterlogging on many major roads.

However, many city dwellers welcomed the rain as it came after two days of sultry weather, bringing down the mercury level, reports UNB.

Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has predicted heavy rainfall in next 48 hours as of 10:00 am on Tuesday, according to the BSS report.

BMD official said, "Under the influence of severe thunderstorm activity heavy to heavy rainfall with gusty or squally wind is likely to occur over regions of Rajshahi, Rangpur, Dinajpur, Pabna, Bogura, Tangail, Mymensingh, Sylhet, Jasshore, Kushtia, Faridpur, Madaripur, Khulna, Barishal, Patuakhali, Dhaka, Cumilla and Noakhali during the next 48 hours. "

In a weather forecast, it also said trough of westerly low lies over West Bengal and adjoining area. Seasonal low lies over South Bay.

Rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary west or northwesterly gusty or squally wind speeding 45-60 kph is likely to occur elsewhere over the country.

The river ports in the area shall hoist cautionary signal number one, the BMD said.

Amid the bad weather, the authorities concerned have suspended the plying of launches and steamers from Sadarghat Launch Terminal until further notice.
