Mobile operators not providing satisfactory services, says BTRC chief

The country’s mobile operators are not providing services to the clients up to the mark, said newly appointed Chairman of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (BTRC) Shyam Sunder Sikder on Thursday.

“We tested their quality of service, it is poor, very poor,” he said replying to a question while talking to journalists at BTRC headquarters for the first time after his appointment last month.

Among other reasons for the poor quality services, he identified a lack of adequate spectrum to the telecom operator is the key reason.

Mr Sikder admitted that operators are not solely responsible for the poor services; manpower shortage in BTRC, its technical deficiency, poor regulatory monitoring, and inconsistency in policies and guidelines are also accountable for poor services.

He said there is a fault in the quality service guidelines that have to be amended to ensure quality services.

BTRC chairman said there are conflicting and overlapping clauses in some guidelines and policies that will also be amended.

Mr Sikder said he would work on the deficiencies and there will be more workforce and strengthening capacity of monitoring very soon.

However, Director General (Spectrum Division) of BTRC Brig Gen Md Shahidul Alam said poor quality handsets and adequate mobile towers in places are also reasons for poor telecom services.

He said new mobile network towers are being built in full swing, 500 new towers will be built by this month.
