Prime ministers of Bangladesh and India will inaugurate the new passenger train service, Mitali Express, between Dhaka and India’s New Jalpaiguri on March 27 marking the golden jubilee of Bangladesh’s independence.

However, the train may take time to start full-fledged operations due to the suspension of cross-border train services amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Railway Minister Nurul Islam Sujon gave the information while briefing reporters on the inauguration of the new train service at his ministry on Monday.  Railway Ministry Secretary Selim Reza and other officials were present at that time.

The minister informed that the Mitali Express will be operated on twice a week from both countries.

It will start the journey from Dhaka Cantonment station on Monday and Thursday and from Jalpaiguri on Sunday and Wednesday.

Tk 4905 will be charged as fare for every seat in the AC berth compartment, Tk 3805 for a seat in the AC seat, and Tk 2705 for the AC chair seat from passengers of all ages. Fares for children up to five years will be a half.

The minister also said passengers from Chilahati station can enjoy the train service only in AC chair buying tickets at Tk 1235.

He said immigration checking for passengers from Dhaka will be done at Cantonment Station and Chilahati passengers at Chilahati station in Nilphamari district of Bangladesh.
