Minister rules out separate secretariat idea for judiciary

Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Anisul Huq has rejected outright the idea of a separate secretariat for judiciary.

Terming it a unrealistic demand, he said, "There is no separate secretariat for judiciary in any democratic or undemocratic countries in the world. It doesn't exist in any 193 countries under United Nations. So under the present circumstances, forming separate secretariat for judiciary is an unrealistic idea. But yes, we cannot say what will happen in the future."

The minister came up with the observations on Sunday while talking to newsmen after attending the inaugural session of 21st Judicial Administration Training Course for district and sessions judges and equivalent officials at the judicial Administrative Training Institute (JATI) in the city.

UNB said the matter of forming separate secretariat for the judiciary came into discussion following one of the 12 directions given by court in the verdict of Masdar Hossain case.

While replying a question on going back to article 116 of the constitution of 1972, Anisul said the present scenario under the context of Bangladesh is best for judiciary.

Answering another question on plea seeking review of the 16th amendment of the constitution, the law minister said the constitution has given rights to every citizen to file review plea, adding, "Even government has the right and it has exercised the right. Now the Appellate Division will hold hearing on it whenever it wants. Even the government wants the end of the debate and disposal of the case."

Presided over by JATI Director General Justice Khandaker Musa Khaled, the programme was also addressed by Law Secretary Abu Saleh Sheikh Md Zahirul Haque, among others.
