Met office’s server gives way due to excessive traffic

The server of Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) went out of service on Thursday noon, seriously affecting the organisation’s day-to-day activities, officials said.

The server went down at a time when ‘Fani’, the most powerful cyclonic storm in 42 years, is about to hit the country’s coastal region on Friday.

Md Kamrul Hasan, meteorologist at BMD, told FE that the excessive internet traffic caused the server to crash at 3.00pm.

“The server received 0.15 million hits between 12 noon and 3:00pm on Thursday, which was beyond its capacity,” he said, adding the company which maintains the server is working to resolve the problem.
