The country is likely to be hit by at least one cyclone in October after a spell of unbearable heat, Bangladesh Meteorological Department has said in a forecast.
The southwest monsoon winds would peter out this month, the weather forecast from the Met office said.
“One or two depressions may form over the Bay of Bengal in October, at least one of which is likely to turn into a cyclone,” Shamsuddin Ahmed, a Met office director, said.
The southwest monsoon will end in the first week of October, Ahmed said. River waters may swell, although it will stay below the danger level, Ahmed added.
There have been two depressions over the bay in September, one of which turned into a cyclone and crossed the Orissa coast in India.
The country experienced moderate heat towards the end of the month.
Unbearable heat
The country has been experiencing less rainfall over the last few days as the monsoon wind has become less active. It feels hot and stuffy throughout the country.
The highest temperature on Monday was recorded in Jashore at 37.4 C. Dhaka’s temperature rose as much as 35.7 C, bdnews24 reported.
Light to moderate rains or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty winds are likely to occur at one or two places over Chattogram and Sylhet divisions and weather may remain mainly dry with temporary partly cloudy sky elsewhere over the country.
