Mega project to ease Chattogram waterlogging from next monsoon

A mega project to eradicate Chattogram waterlogging problem is likely to bear fruits to some extent from the next monsoon.

The possibility has come up as re-excavation of 16 canals, including Chaktai Khal, under the project is progressing fast in the port city.

CDA Chairman Abdus Salam said, “We cannot assure of a complete relief from waterlogging in the upcoming monsoon, but we hope there’ll be a positive result.”

The government undertook the project titled ‘’Canal re-excavation, renovation and expansion to eradicate waterlogging of Chattogram” worth Tk 56.16 billion on August 9.

Under the project, a total of 36 canals of Chattogram city will be re-excavated.

The project also includes constructing drains nearby to remove rainwater, acquiring 96 acres of land, and constructing 176,000 metres of retaining wall, 85.68km of roada, 48 PC bridges and six culverts.

Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) is implementing the project under the supervision of the Bangladesh Army, UNB reported.

The project is expected to complete on June 30, 2020 as its works started in July 2017.
