Measures within seven days against those who made ‘ghost’ electricity bill

Power Division on Thursday took a decision to take punitive measures within the next seven days against those involved with making ‘ghost’ electricity bills.

A taskforce headed by an additional secretary of the division under the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources (MPEMR) will look after the issue.

The decision was taken during a virtual meeting on the assessment of the progress of project works of state-run power entities under Annual Development Programme (ADP).

State minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid presided over the meeting.

In the meeting, managing directors of the state-run electricity distribution companies, including Dhaka Electric Supply Company Ltd (DESCO), Dhaka Power Distribution Company Ltd (DPDC) and Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) regretted adding additional amounts on the electricity bills and decided to explain the reason to their clients through media.

Hamid in a separate meeting on the day acknowledged the ‘mistakes’ of the power distribution companies.

A good number of electricity consumers across the country alleged that they had been getting exorbitant bills over the past several months.

During the meeting it was observed that 70.61 per cent of the project work under the power division was completed in May.

Some 104 projects were completed during the outgoing fiscal year 2019-2020.

It was expected in the meeting that 90 per cent of the project work would be completed by the end of this month.

Power secretary Dr Sultan Ahmed, director general of Power Cell Mohamamd Hossain, BPDB chairman Belayet Hossain, among others, were present in the meeting.
