Maya's graft case: HC verdict on Oct 7

The High Court verdict on an appeal filed by Disaster Management Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya against his sentence of 13 years imprisonment will be delivered on October 7.

A bench of Justice Md Nazrul Isalm Talukder and Justice KM Hafizul Alam announced the date on Tuesday after concluding the re-hearing on his appeal filed against the lower court order that had sentenced the minister in a graft case, reports UNB.

On June 13, 2007, Assistant Director of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), Nurul Alam filed the case with Sutrapur Police Station for amassing illegal wealth of Tk 2.9 million.

A Special Judges Court on February 14, 2008, sentenced Maya to 13 years jail and also fined him Tk 50 million over the wealth accumulation.

Meanwhile, Maya filed an appeal on May 25, 2009, with High Court and the HC cancelled the sentence of the Awami League leader on October 27, 2010.

Later, on June 14, 2015, a three-member bench of Appellate Division led by former Chief Justice SK Sinha cancelled the HC order acquitting the ruling party leader from the graft charges and ordered to re-hear his appeal.
