Maulana Saad not to join Ijtema: Home minister

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said Indian Tabligh-Jamaat scholar Maulana Saad Kandhalvi will not attend the 53rd Bishwa Ijtema to be held from January 12-14.

The minister revealed the decision after a meeting with the representatives of Tabligh-Jamaat at his ministry on Thursday afternoon.

Maulana Saad Kandhalvi will not attend the Ijtema but stay in Dhaka, Kamal said.

"He will left Dhaka in a suitable time," the minister said.

Asaduzzaman said top scholars of Tabligh-Jamaat will decide who will conduct Akheri Munajat, the concluding phase of the religious gathering.

Earlier on Wednesday, A faction of the Tabligh Jamaat blocked the street in front of airport protesting the arrival of the top Islamic scholar Maulana Saad Kandhalvi from India to attend the Ijtema.

Several local news agencies said, more than 500 people, belonging to a faction of Islamic ideological movement Tabligh Jamaat sat on the road.

They chanted slogans against Maulana Saad Kandhalvi for what they claimed was his "controversial comment about the Koran and Sunnah."

The followers of this faction are mostly belong to Hefajat-e Islam.

Tabligh-Jamaat is the largest organisation of Sunni Muslims in the Indian subcontinent. Its headquarters, referred to as the Markaz, is based in New Delhi. Its operations are conducted through 13-member central council, called the Nezamuddin.

Kandhalvi has reportedly announced himself as the chief of the body, which created a rift among the senior members of the Tabligh-Jamaat’s Bangladesh chapter.

In November, a scuffle broke out between two groups on the premises of Dhaka’s Kakrail Mosque, the headquarters of Tabligh-Jamaat’s Bangladesh chapter.
