Mariners call for immediate action to bring back crew of ‘Banglar Samriddhi’

Mariners at a press conference demanded that all the crew of ‘Banglar Samriddhi’ be brought home immediately. They also urged the government and concerned authorities to extend necessary support to the family of Marine Engineer Hadisur Rahman who was killed after the ship came under a missile attack on March 2 in Ukraine.

The Central Committee of Bangabandhu Nou Parishad arranged the press conference at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity in the capital on Saturday, according to a statement.

While addressing the programme, Marine Engineer Sher Shah, briefed the reporters on the whole situation.

On behalf of the organisation, he also placed seven-point demand including burial of Hadisur with state honour and recognition to the sailors who tackled the situation with bravery immediately after the attack.

He also questioned the decision that allowed the ship, owned by Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC) to sail for war-stricken Ukraine.

Ashraf Ibn Noor, president of Bangabandhu Nou Parishad, discussed rules and regulations regarding vessel operations and Maritime Act.  

He also praised State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the government for prompt action to evacuate the ship.

Later, he also replied to queries reporters.

Meanwhile, 28 eight crew of "Banglar Samriddhi" have been safely evacuated to Romania from war-torn Ukraine.

Earlier, Shakhawat Hossain, general secretary of Bangladesh Merchant Marine Officers' Association (BMMOA), said, "All 28 Crew of Banglar Samriddhi have cleared immigration safely at 9:00am [local time] and now they are in Moldova."

"Body of engineer Hadisur has been kept in a freezer at Olvia Port," he added.
