TANGAIL, July 23: Commercial banana cultivation has made thousands of growers self-reliant across the district.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Tangail, sources said some 6,353 hectares of land have been brought under the farming of the fruit farming with the production target of 11,0481 tonnes.
Ruhul Amin, sub-assistant agriculture officer of DAE, said Modhupur, Ghatail, Shakhipur and Kalihati upazilas in the district are well-known for producing quality banana.
A banana grower Shona Miah of Jalchatra area under Modhupur upazila said growers now apply different modern techniques at their banana fields to get a good yield.
"We make a handsome profit from the cultivation every season", he added.
A wholesaler of Parkmoydan Bazar of the district town Golap Miah said one pone (80 pieces) of 'Sharbi' banana is selling at Tk 300 to Tk 400 as per quality and sizes.
Moreover, prices of Chapa, Shagor and Madni varieties are also high in the local market, he added.
One hali (four pieces) Sharbi is sold at Tk 16 to Tk 30, Chapa Tk 10 to Tk 15, Sagor Tk 15 to Tk 20, Madni Tk 12 to Tk 15 as per size.
Sub-assistant agriculture officer of Tangail DAE Shariful Islam said banana farming is profitable. One can improve his financial condition by growing banana by applying modern methods.
Banana farming is also popular at homesteads, he added.
