Man dies as wall collapses after building explosion in Dhaka

A person has died in a wall collapse triggered by an unexplained building explosion at Shonir Akhra in Dhaka.

Four others were injured in the incident at the three-storey RS Tower around 9:30am on Monday, said Jamal Uddin Mir, chief of Kadamtali Police Station.

The dead has been identified as 50-year-old Farid Ahmed, a prayer cap seller and a resident of Kadamtali’s Rasulpur.

Among the injured, one was a rickshaw-puller and others were fruit traders. They were admitted to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital, bdnews24.com reported.

The building has a restaurant on the ground floor and a branch of EXIM Bank on the first and second floors, said OC Mir.

A sudden explosion at the upper part of the building caused the wall fronting road to collapse, leading to the casualties, he added.

“It is still not clear what happened there. But it seems that an AC compressor bursting might cause the wall to collapse.”

However, firefighter Kazi Nazimuzzaman declined to comment about the cause of the explosion immediately.
