Mahila Parishad calls for end to unlawful drug killings

Condemning the alleged extrajudicial killings of suspected drug offenders, Bangladesh Mahila Parishad (BMP) has called for an immediate stop to these serious human rights violations and bringing the perpetrators to justice.

Some 138 people have reportedly been shot dead by the security forces across the country since May 15 and another 10,046 arrested during the ongoing anti-narcotics crackdown.

Terming the killings spree as unlawful, the national non-political and voluntary women's organisation said the main goal of the drive should be breaking the vicious circle which was built long ago due to the culture of impunity.

The law enforcement agencies must be accountable for every violation of human rights and those who are involved in such killings will have to be brought to book, BMP speakers said at a press conference held at the Sufia Kamal Bhaban auditorium in the city on Sunday.

Speaking on the occasion, Bangladesh Mahila Parishad president Ayesha Khanam said all sources of drugs must be dismantled soon to exterminate the social menace.

She urged the government to stop such type of drive immediately to ensure the good governance.

BMP general secretary Maleka Banu, among others, was present at the event.
