MAGURA, Oct 23: Most of the farmers in the district are applying the perching method to kill insects in their Aman paddy field.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Magura, sources said some 58,490 hectares of land have been brought under the farming of Aman paddy cultivation in the district this season.
Farmers use perching method for killing harmful insects in the paddy field.
In the method, growers erect poles in the field at specific distances.
Birds perch on the poles in search of food and eat insect.
DAE officials said perching method has two different types - dried perching and live perching.
In dried perching, dried branches or sticks are tied horizontally 10 to 12 feet in the field while in live perching some trees like banana are planted in the field where birds rest and consume insects.
They further said perching method is environment friendly and helpful to our ecology.
Farmer Shahidul Islam of Akshi village under Magura Sadar said he started applying the method in his Aman field according to the suggestion of the local DAE officials.
Another grower Golapdi Biswas of Kalundi village under Sreepur upazila said perching method reduces cost and time.
Magura DAE official Sohrab Hossein said, "We have attained the success in bringing cent per cent Aman field in the district under perching method. Perching method has relieved farmers from the pressure of purchasing insecticides. Now we are expecting a bumper yield of Aman this season."
