MAGURA, Apr 07: The district has experienced a success in producing BINA Gram-4 for the first time.
Some 10 acres of land on the compound of the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Magura sub-centre, were brought under the farming of the gram variety.
The harvest has recently completed.
In this connection, the office arranged a field-day on the crop.
The officials said a bumper production has been achieved.
A total of 154 maunds of yield have been achieved.
Around 5.5 maunds of yield can be produced from a bigha of land while it is around 3.5 maunds for local varieties, a BINA official said.
The official also said BINA Gram-4 is less vulnerable to fungal attack and root rotting disease.
The variety also requires less fertiliser and insecticide.
Magura DAE Deputy Director Jahidul Amin was the chief guest of the event while scientific officer of Magura BINA sub-centre Shampa Rani Ghosh was also present.
Magura BINA sub-centre officer in charge Shushan Chouhan presided over the programme.
Magura DAE official Shohrab Hossein said cultivation of high-yielding BINA Gram-4 should be expanded across the country.
"The growers will be benefited and the country would be able to save a huge amount foreign currency", the official further said.
