Low develops in Bay of Bengal

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has issued a cautionary signal No. 1 after a low pressure system developed in the Bay of Bengal.

According to a Special Bulletin, the system is expected to intensify and move north-northwest.

As of 6am on Thursday, the centre of the system was 1,400km southwest of Chittagong port, 1,330km southwest of Cox’s Bazar port, 1,375km south-southwest of Mongla port and 1,335km south-southwest of Payra port.

Gusts and squalls from 40kmph to 50kmph have been sustained within 44km of the centre of the depression. The sea, however, remains moderate near the centre.

The Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra ports have been advised to keep a distant cautionary signal No. 1 (R) hoisted, reports bdnews24.

Fishing boats and trawlers in the North Bay area have been instructed to use caution and advised to stay near the port.

A previous long-term Meteorological Department forecast for December had suggested low-pressure systems could develop in the Bay of Bengal.
