LoC, connectivity, trade top priority

Enhancing connectivity and bilateral trade, and completion of Line of Credit (LoC) projects will be on priorities.

India's new High Commissioner to Bangladesh Vikram Doraiswami said this in his maiden press briefing  on Thursday.

He also pledged to increase the investment by Indian businesses in Bangladesh during his tenure.

Terming India’s relationship with Bangladesh ‘a very special one’ Mr Vikram said that this relationship is beyond the ‘strategic partnership’.

The term ‘strategic partnership’ is widely used  to define Bangladesh’s ties with China.

Doraiswami, a 1992-batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service, handed over his credentials to Bangladesh President Abdul Hamid on Thursday

He also mentioned that ‘fraternity with Bangladesh’ is being given highest priority by the Indian government.

Responding to a query, the high commissioner said border killing is not at all desired and India is very much aware of the sentiment of the people of Bangladesh in this regard.

Terming this a ‘law and order problem’ the high commissioner noted that though the solution to the problem is not easy, it can be resolved through the joint efforts of the both the border forces.

On the issue of cooperation on Covid pandemic, he said that India has assured Bangladesh that whenever the trial of the vaccine will be held in India, the same opportunity would be provided to Bangladesh.

Regarding the unresolved issues with Bangladesh the diplomat said that the leadership of both the countries are committed to finding out a solution to all of these.

‘Wait and see’ he remarked in this connection.

The high commissioner praises the economic growth achieved by Bangladesh recently and the country is respected throughout the world for its performances in various socio-economic indicators.

Doraiswami, accompanied by his wife Sangeeta Doraiswami, arrived in Dhaka through Akhaura land border on October 5. He is the 17th high commissioner of India to Bangladesh.

Doraiswami, was Additional Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in New Delhi. He succeeded Riva Das Ganguly.
