Lawyers to get long-term loan at low interest: Law minister

Law Minister Anisul Huq has said lawyers will get long-term loans at low interest rate to cope with the financial crisis caused by coronavirus outbreak.

“Lawyers could not practice for around 2.5 months, making them suffer a huge financial crisis. The crisis was even grave for the junior lawyers. They were suffering the most. They would be given long-term loan through the Bangladesh Bar Council to cope with the crisis,” he said.

The law minister came up with the statement while addressing a virtual function on Sunday to inaugurate newly-constructed eight-storied Faridpur Chief Judicial Magistrate Court Building, reports BSS.

“We have been able to complete trial of Bangabandhu murder, jail killings and war criminals during the tenure of Sheikh Hasina government. Verdict was delivered in a case over custodial death, which was first of its kind in this sub-continent. All should remember the fact that none is above the law and all would be brought to justice for violating law,” he added.

The law minister said currently around 3.7 million cases remain pending before different courts across the country, adding, “We have to ease this backlog of cases.”

“We would implement the Tk 28.76 billion e-judiciary project. We would take a middle path between ‘justice delayed is justice denied’ and ‘justice hurried is justice buried’ and would try to lessen the number of pending cases,” Anisul further said.

Presided over by Faridpur District and Sessions Judge Md Selim Miah, the virtual programme was further addressed by Faridpur-1 lawmaker Monjur Hossain, Faridpur-4 lawmaker Mojibur Rahman Chowdhury (Nixon), Law and Justice Division Secretary Md Golam Sarwar and Faridpur Deputy Commissioner Atul Sarker, among others.
