Lawmakers have over Tk 11.4m unpaid phone bills

The Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL) is yet to get phone bills of over Tk 11.4 million from the members of parliament in dues until 2011-12 fiscal year.

The government phone company did not get any response has not heard from them despite repeated reminders.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Accounts asked BTCL to adjust the dues through the Parliament Secretariat during a meeting on Sunday, reports bdnews24.com.

A member of the committee said, any specific recommendation was not made on the dues as the BTCL did not specify the amounts against the names of the lawmakers having the dues.

The BTCL said in the meeting that it continued reminding the lawmakers about the dues.

But, the company has not cut the lawmakers' phone connections considering their importance.

Besides other allowances, the lawmakers get Tk 7,800 a month to pay phone bills. The amount was Tk 6,000 before 2016 and Tk 4,000 in 2001.

The cabinet in 2013 cleared a proposal waiving around Tk 1.2 million in unpaid phone bills of eight late lawmakers.
