Law minister against formulating EC law hastily

Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq has said it would not be right to formulate a law to form Election Commission (EC) in a hurry.

The minister came up with the statement after coming out of his meeting with a delegation of Shushashoner Jonno Nagorik (Shujan) at his Gulshan office on Thursday night, reports BSS.

Led by its secretary Dr Badiul Alam Majumder, the Shujan delegation handed over a draft copy of the Election Commission Appointment Act, prepared by the civil rights organisation, to the minister.

In reply to Dr Badiul Alam Majumder's request to formulate the EC law by issuing an ordinance, the law minister said it would not be right to formulate the law, bypassing the parliament.

"The tenure of the current Election Commission will end in February. So, it is not possible to formulate the law within this short time. Though the existing provision of forming the EC through a search committee is not a law, I would say, it is closer to the law as the President forms this search committee," Anisul Huq said.

Dr Shahdeen Malik, Syed Abu Naser Bakhtiar Ahmed, Professor Robaet Ferdous and Dilip Kumar Sarker, were present on the occasion, among others.
