Language movement veteran Dr Mirza Mazharul dies

Ekushey Padak recipient and language movement veteran Dr Mirza Mazharul Islam died of old age complications at a city hospital on Sunday morning at the age of 93.

Mirza Mazharul Islam, who was a member of Rashtrabhasha Sangram Parishad formed at Dhaka Medical College on September 30 in 1947, actively participated in the language movement, reports BSS.

He, who was a doctor by profession, provided treatment to many language movement activists injured during the attack on students by the police on February 21, 1952.

He also joined Amtala meeting on Dhaka Medical College Hospital premises during the movement.

Professor Mazharul participated in the War of Independence in 1971 and played significant role in providing treatment to the injured.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of the noted physician.

In the message of condolence, the premier recalled his contribution to the medical arena with due respect.

State Minister for Cultural Affairs KM Khalid expressed profound shock and sorrow at his death.

The state minister prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed sympathy to the bereaved family members.
