About 600,000 landline users across the country faced difficulties on Sunday after a ‘core cable’ of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Company Ltd was disconnected.
However, the BTCL says the technical issue, which began on Sunday morning, has mostly been resolved in the late afternoon, reports bdnews24.com.
During the period, mobile phones were not able to connect landlines. But landlines were able to connect other landlines.
The cable was disconnected while development work on a water line was underway in Moghbazar near the Bishal Centre, BTCL spokesman Mir Mohammad Morshed told said on Sunday.
“All mobile phone connections are through this core cable and so the damage to it caused the problems,” he said.
Repair on the cable began as soon as the problem was noticed in the morning, he said.
“The cable has almost been replaced. The connection problems have largely been fixed,” he added.
According to Morshed, over 600,000 landline users use the BTCL service. Nearly all of them faced problems due the cable severance.
Last year, a ‘core’ BTCL cable was damaged during renovation work in Moghbazar disrupting services to hundreds of thousands of people.
