Khulna journalist put on three-day remand

A court in Khulna has placed Hedait Hossain Mollah, Khulna correspondent of Dhaka Tribune and online portal Bangla Tribune, on three-day remand in a case filed under the Digital Security Act.

The case was filed for running reports on election results of Khunla-1 constituency with 'false' information, reports UNB.

Judge Nayan Biswas of Khulna Judicial Magistrate court-3 passed the order on Wednesday after officer-in-charge of Batiaghata Police Station Mahbubur Rahman, also investigation officer of the case, produced him before the court seeking a seven-day remand.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Assistant Returning Officer Debashish Chowdhury filed the case with his police station on Monday night against Hedait, also the city editor of local newspaper Dainik Probaho, and Rashedul Islam, Khulna Bureau Chief of the Dainik Manabzamin and newly elected vice-president of Khulna Press Club.

Plainclothes police picked up Hedait from Gallamari area in the city around 2:15 pm on Tuesday.

Later, a court sent him to jail.

According to the case statement, Bangla Tribune and Manabzamin published reports headlined '22,419 more than total votes cast in Khulna-1' based on false and fabricated information.
