Khaleda’s medical tests Tuesday: Prisons chief

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia will be taken to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University for medical tests on Tuesday if she agrees, the inspector general of prisons has said.

“The code of conduct does not allow jail authorities to take Khaleda Zia to United Hospital for a medical check-up as her party demanded,” Syed Iftekhar Uddin told reporters during a news briefing on Khaleda’s health condition on Monday.

The BNP has long been demanding the government take Khaleda to the United Hospital for medical tests. Khaleda's personal physicians also made the same recommendation.

“There is no scope for spending public fund on Khaleda’s treatment in private hospitals under the jail code,” Iftekhar said.

But any prisoner can be treated in private hospitals, if the government wants, he said adding that the decision needs to be taken on who will bear the treatment cost, bdnews24 reported.

After visiting Khaleda on June 5, Khaleda’s personal physicians said the BNP Chairperson was briefly unconscious. “She did not become unconscious. She was just unsteady,” said Iftekhar.
