Khaleda Zia yet to get division in jail

Chairperson of BNP Khaleda Zia has not yet been given division in jail although she is a former prime minister.

Senior BNP leader Barrister Moudud Ahmed came up with the allegation on Saturday.

According to him, "It's a matter of regret that our leader (Khaleda) has not yet been given division though she is a three-time Prime Minister."

Also a counsel for Khaleda, Mr Moudud brought the allegation while talking to the journalists at the gate of old central jail at Nazimuddin Road in the capital before meeting Khaleda.

A total of 18 categories of prisoners, including ex-prime minister, are entitled to get division under the jail code, he noted, adding, "But she [Khaleda] has not been given that."

Mr Moudud, also a former law minister, said they will file an appeal against the lower court verdict as soon as they get a certified copy of the judgement.

He and four other lawyers of Khaleda Zia -- Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar, former attorney general AJ Mohammad Ali, Abdur Rezzak Khan and Khandker Mahbub Hossain – later entered the jail at 4:20pm and came out around 6:00pm.

A special court on Thursday convicted Khaleda and sentenced her to five years of imprisonment in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.

UNB said she was later taken to the old central jail at Nazimuddin Road.
