GOPALGANJ, Aug 08: Jute growers in the district are passing busy time harvesting their produce.
Sources said newly-harvested jute has started appearing in the local markets and growers are expecting a good market price.
New jute is selling at Tk 2,400 to Tk 2,500 per maund depending on variety and quality, sources added.
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Gopalganj official sources, a total of 25,590 hectares of land were brought under the production of jute in the district this season with the production target of 76,500 tonnes.
Kanai Biswas (52), a farmer of Charnarayandia village under Sadar upazila, said he cultivated jute on two bighas (104 decimal) of land and got about 30 maunds of yield.
"I expect to earn around Tk 75,000 from the produce", the grower added.
Ramesh Chandra Bramha, deputy director (Agriculture), Gopalganj, said favaourable weather, smooth supply of necessary agri-inputs and farmers' hard work helped achieve a desired yield of the cash crop.
