Judiciary is now corruption free: AG

Attorney General Mahbubey Alam said that the judiciary is now freed of burden on his reaction to Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha resignation on Saturday.

"A person should not remain in the judiciary if he is involved in corruption or allegation of moral turpitude raised against him", he said.

The AG told it to reporters at his office on Sunday, says a UNB report.

"He had no other choice but to quit as other justices of the Appellate Division refused to sit along with him," he added.

Mahbubey said that the resignation letter of Sinha will go to the ministry from President's residence, and then a gazette notification will be issued in this regard.

Amid various speculations and row over the Supreme Court's 16th amendment verdict, Sinha, staying abroad, finally stepped down on Saturday by sending his resignation letter to President Abdul Hamid.

Sinha went on leave on October 3 and left for Australia on October 13.

A day after Sinha's leave, the Supreme Court issued a statement saying the Chief Justice is facing 11 charges, including graft and money laundering.

Later, the government named Md Abdul Wahhab Miah as the acting chief justice.

On July 3 last, the Appellate Division, led by Sinha, upheld a High Court verdict that declared illegal the 16th amendment of the constitution scrapping the Jatiya Sangsad's power to remove Supreme Court judges for incapacity or misconduct.

Sinha was widely criticised by ministers and ruling party leaders for his observations made in the verdict. They also demanded his resignation.
