Judicial proceedings of more virtual courts resume

Judicial proceedings of more virtual courts have resumed from today (Sunday) after the regular court functions remained closed for 38 days till Saturday as the government imposed strict restrictions mainly on public and vehicular movement from July 1, according to a top court circular.

However, a limited number of virtual courts of both the Supreme Courts and subordinate courts had been running until Saturday to dispose of some very urgent petitions amid the nationwide restrictions.

Citing a Friday’s circular issued by the apex court, Mohammad Saifur Rahman, spokesperson and special officer of the Supreme Court told The Financial Express that one bench of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) has resumed online hearing from today and the hearing will be held till August 12.

Apart from this, twelve benches of the High Court (HC) started such hearings from August 8 to August 12, he said.

On a limited scale, physical court activities are also going on to file especially criminal lawsuits, Mr Rahman said.

Another circular issued on Saturday said lower courts and tribunals in districts and metropolitan areas will hear criminal and civil matters virtually except trial proceedings.

Guardianship and succession matters in lower civil courts can be filed, heard and disposed of physically following heath rules, the circular said.

Accused in criminal cases can surrender physically in criminal courts and tribunals, it added.
