A Jahangirnagar University student has been killed and another student injured after an iron rod hit them falling off a construction site in Dhanmondi in Dhaka.
The incident occurred on Friday evening next to the Medinova building in Dhanmondi, said Dhanmondi Police Station SI Golam Mostofa.
The deceased has been identified as 21-year-old Mahmud bin Ashraf, who was a student of the Department of Philosophy at Jahangirnagar University. The injured has been identified as Iftedar Evan, 21, a student at a private university in Dhanmondi. Evan has been admitted to a local hospital.
According to SI Golam Mostafa, the two were playing cricket with their friends on an empty road next to Medinova on Friday evening when an iron rod from a nearby construction site fell onto the electric lines above them.
There was a loud sound and the area went out of power, bdnews24 reported.
The rod then fell onto Ashraf and Evan. Both were first taken to a local hospital, as Ashraf’s health was critical, he was transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Doctors declared him dead at around 9:00 pm.
The impact from the falling rod had severely damaged Ashraf’s spinal cord, SI Mostafa said citing doctors.
