JOYPURHAT, Oct 09: Authority of the Joypurhat Sugar Mill is expecting to produce around 500 tonnes of sugar this season.
The mill official sources said farmers of the district have brought over 6,500 acres of land under the production of sugarcane this season against 10,000 acres of target.
Some 70,000 tonnes of sugarcane are expected to be produced from the said land, they further said.
A good number of farmers said sugarcane requires less fertilisers and pesticides. But, it needs frequent irrigation'
The Ishwardi-16, Ishwardi-26, Ishwardi-26, Ishwardi -32, Ishwardi -33, Ishwardi -34, Ishwardi -35, Ishwardi -36, Ishwardi -37, Ishwardi -46 and Ishwardi-47 are the popular sugarcane varieties among the farmers.
Many farmers said sugarcane cultivation is decreasing gradually as the crop takes more than 10 months to be harvested.
Farmers generally start the cultivation in January to February and harvest starts in December.
Managing Director of Joypurhat Sugar Mill Md Mustafa Kamal said sugarcane is an important crop in the country.
"We should support the growers to grow it in more land", he added.
