Joypurhat DAE eyes over 400 tonnes of ginger yield

JOYPURHAT, Oct 11: The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) is expecting to grow over 400 tonnes of ginger in the district this season.

The farmers can grow the spice crop easily after harvesting Boro paddy.

Growers sow the seeds from July to August and start harvesting from November to December if the weather condition remains favourable.

Ginger cultivation is expanding across the district due to lucrative profit, said sub-assistance agriculture officer of the DAE.

Meanwhile, getting repeated bumper production and fair market prices a good number of growers attained financial solvency over the last few years.

Ginger grows well in Aakkelpur, Panchbibi, Kalai, Khetlal and Sadar upazilas of the district.

Ginger peasants spend nearly Tk 10,500 to Tk 11,000 to grow the item on 30 decimals of land and make a profit around Tk 20,000 to Tk 25,000 if the market rate remains stable.

Each maund of the item is being sold at Tk 2,600 to Tk 3,300 in the retail market while the wholesale rate is between Tk 2,500 to Tk 2,700.

Deputy Director of DAE Sudhundranath Roy said ginger production is profitable among the farmers.

"We provide all support among the eager farmers", he added.
