Experts and officials have made a call for joint efforts to recover rivers from grabbers, and a social movement against the river grabbing in order for a sound and liveable environment in the country.

Speakers made remarks at the closing ceremony of the three-day 4th international conference on Bangladesh’s environment (ICBEN-4) jointly organised by Bangladesh Environment Movement (BAPA) and Bangladesh Environment Network (BEN).

Over 40 renowned environmental and social activists joined the event from some 11 countries across the globe, including local and foreign experts, scientists, researchers, and professionals. The three-day virtual event ended on Monday night.

Speaking as the chief guest at the ‘closing’ ceremony, Planning Minister M. A. Mannan said that the government is very conscious about the environment, and activities that could put harm to the environment will not be tolerated.

A total of 150 articles were presented in 18 general sessions at the three-day event.

Besides, some 50 foreign scientists from 11 countries including environment and social workers as well as experts, researchers, professionals, took part in the event.

A total of 1,200 people from all walks of life, including youth and students, also participated in the virtual conference.

Dr. Muzibur Rahman Howlader, chairman of the National River Conservation Commission, addressed the event’s ‘Joint General Session’ as the chief guest.

"We have prepared a list of the river grabbers. We received support from people which is positive news for us to rescue the country's rivers,” he said.

Flood problem in Bangladesh is another big problem, so we have to create mass awareness to protect rivers, he continued. And, it’s difficult for the government alone to raise the river, so we want the support and cooperation of organisations, civil society, and others working on the environment.

President of BAPA Sultana Kamal said her organisation is cooperating with the government by providing information on various environmental issues.

“We will continue this collaboration in the future. Our job is to make the government aware and co-operate on environmental issues. But, it is the government's responsibility to implement it. We believe the government will listen to us,” she added.
